Polymechanics (CFC)

The profession of polymechanic combines several different disciplines (mechanics, precision mechanics, and machine mechanics).
It brings together cutting-edge technology and manual work: covering everything from traditional mechanics to CNC machining, including assembly, drafting, and measurement.

It is a very demanding job that requires:

  • Very good grades in mathematics, French, and physics
  • Logical thinking
  • Good spatial awareness
  • Very precise and meticulous working methods
  • Team spirit and the ability to work independently
  • Manual dexterity
  • A taste for mechanics and machines

The training alternates between practical work at CERN (3–4 days per week) and theoretical instruction at the vocational school (1–2 days per week).

At the end of the training, apprentices obtain a Swiss Federal Certificate of Competence (CFC). It is also possible to obtain a Professional Maturity qualification during the apprenticeship, provided that the required conditions are met.
